How to Choose the Right PPF Thickness
Understanding mil ratings, trade-offs between protection and conformability, and when to use standard vs thick PPF for different applications.
What Mil Ratings Mean
PPF thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Most automotive PPF falls between 6 and 10 mil. The number includes all layers: adhesive, TPU film, and top coat.
Thicker isn't always better. Each mil increase affects conformability, stretch, and installation behavior. The right thickness depends on the application, the vehicle, and what the customer needs.
The Trade-Offs
Thicker film (8+ mil) provides more impact resistance against rock chips and road debris. It's the premium choice for daily drivers, highway vehicles, and front-end protection where the film takes the most abuse.
Thinner film (7-7.5 mil) conforms more easily to compound curves, complex body lines, and tight recesses. It stretches further, tucks cleaner, and installs faster. For full-body wraps and intricate panel work, thinner film often produces better results.
ONE PPF addresses this with two clear options: HydroGloss at 7.5 mil for volume and versatility, and Ultimate HydroGloss at 8.5 mil for maximum protection.
Width Options Matter Too
Film width determines how many seams are needed on large panels. A 60-inch roll covers most vehicle panels in a single piece. A 72-inch roll eliminates seams on wider hoods and roofs, particularly important on trucks, SUVs, and wide-body vehicles.
ONE PPF offers transparent films in 24", 36", 60", and 72" widths. HydroGloss comes in all four widths, making it the most versatile option for shops handling everything from partial fronts to full wraps.
When to Use What
Front-end kits (hood, fenders, bumper): Use 8.5 mil (Ultimate HydroGloss) for maximum rock chip defense.
Full-body wraps: Use 7.5 mil (HydroGloss) for easier conformability across all panels, including complex areas like mirrors, door handles, and bumper recesses.
Color change wraps: Use 7.5 mil color PPF. ONE PPF's entire color lineup is 7.5 mil, optimized for the stretch and tuck needed on full wraps.
Satin/matte builds: Use HydroSatin (7.5 mil, satin) or HydroMatte (7.5 mil, matte), both available in 60" width.
